The Agency for Cycling Ethics, Inc. Announces its Blood Passport Program Pro Continental BMC Racing Team Signs On
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 30, 2008 -- The Agency for Cycling Ethics, Inc., ("ACE"), a subsidiary of The Agency for Sports Ethics, LLC, ("ASE"), is pleased to announce its Blood Passport Program.
In late 2006, ACE introduced its Pure Sport Program, a unique and comprehensive program to monitor cyclists' biological markers (biomarkers) over time in the fight against doping, incorporating an average of over 30 collections per rider per year, and testing of both blood and urine. For 2008, ACE is introducing an additional program - The Blood Passport Program - designed for smaller teams with correspondingly smaller budgets.
The ACE Blood Passport Program is comparable to the UCI Passport Program, offering slightly more blood testing at a small cost. ACE's Blood Passport Program includes an average of 15 random collections per rider per year, both in and out of competition, and provides longitudinal analysis of biological markers, including testing for Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, Mean Corpuscular Volume, Reticulocyte Count, and Off Score (Stimulation Index). As a result, this program provides for blood testing and analysis equal to or greater in frequency than the UCI's 2008 program.
"The ACE Blood Passport program is built on the science of our more comprehensive Pure Sport Program," says ACE Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paul Strauss, "We recognize that not every team can afford the exceptional level of security that the Pure Sport Program provides. Our Blood Passport Program was designed to allow teams who cannot afford our Pure Sport Program the ability to still participate in a monitoring program."
While ACE's Blood Passport Program does not provide the extremely high level of assurance that ACE's Pure Sport Program provides to ProTour teams, it does provide teams not yet at that level with the opportunity to preemptively detect possible doping. It also helps build the database of athlete biological profiles, making the system stronger as time passes.
"If teams had unlimited resources, they could stop all doping." Says ASE Chief Executive Officer, Jim Winett, "Of course, most teams don't have unlimited resources. The Blood Passport Program is a good balance that brings the same or better level of protection provided by the UCI program to teams that might not otherwise be able to invest in an anti-doping monitor program."
Winett adds, "We are excited that the BMC Racing Team has joined in the fight against doping and that we can provide a program to help them have confidence that their team is racing clean."
