Focus e-Gov: GES 2007 to Host e-Government Summit

Singapore (PRWEB) October 26, 2007 -- Global Entrepolis @ Singapore 2007 (GES 2007) today unveiled the agenda for its e-Government Summit - a global platform to promote knowledge-sharing on e-government within the industry. The event will see the presence of Solution Providers, academics, as well as end-user government agencies and public sector practitioners. Solution Providers taking centre-stage at the Summit will include industry heavy-weights like IBM, Cisco, Accenture, CrimsonLogic, and NCS; government agencies will consist of Singapore's Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Defence, Infocomm Development Authority, and Qatar's Supreme Council of Information & Communication Technology; academia will see representation by the National University of Singapore.

Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Second Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Republic of Singapore, will be the Guest of Honour at the Summit. According to him, "Singaporeans expect high-quality, timely services that intelligently address their needs. Well thought out e-governance implementation can also help governments engage citizens in key policy and governance matters. This is a key component of our vision of governance, characterised by integrity, efficiency, efficacy and adaptability in the face of rapid change and high demands."

The Summit is a part of GES 2007 which is being organised by Zenith Events Management, with the Singapore Business Federation and the Singapore Economic Development Board as the presenting organisations. Speaking on the purpose of the Summit, Mr. Chua Taik Him, Chairman, Organising Committee, GES 2007 shared, "e-Government has become a critical enabler of national development today, providing a means for governments to reach out directly to their citizens, a feat which was unachievable in the past - particularly for the developing nations. Through the Summit, we are creating a platform where Solution Providers and government end-users can gather and discuss issues impacting e-government implementation as well as the future roadmap for the next level of development. It will also be a great opportunity for agencies that are planning to deploy e-government as they can learn from the real-world scenarios that will be addressed at the Summit."

Co-organiser of the Summit, eGL Singapore's Ong Lih Ling, Centre Director, added, "e-Government implementation is on the rise in this region as well as the rest of the world. This is primarily because governments have realised the role that ICT can play in connecting them to citizens and they are keen to translate their IT investments into improved governance. According to Government Insights, public sector IT spending in Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) is expected to grow at an average CAGR of 7.9% by 2011 with the People's Republic of China alone expected to account for close to US$12 billion of this expenditure ."

Gary Fung, Managing Director of Zenith Events Managements, organisers of the Summit, commented on Singapore's expertise in e-government. "Singapore was ranked first by an Accenture report earlier this year. Other reputable institutes like Brown University have also ranked Singapore favourably with regard to its e-government practices. The Summit will address very current topics that I'm sure will spark engaging discussions between local and international e-Gov practitioners," he said.

This year's topics focus on real-world deployments across the government sector, going in-depth into key challenges faced, strategic drivers, success stories, and future roadmap. They range from 'Towards an Integrated Government: Singapore's e-Government Journey', 'Enhancing Efficiency & Transparency through e-Procurement: A Case Study', to 'Leveraging Public-Private Sector Partnership to enhance e-Government Service Delivery' and 'Challenges in Working with Government to Deliver the e-Government Agenda - An Industry View'.

Besides individual presentations, there will also be some panel discussions in order to infuse maximum-possible interactivity into the event.

St Thomas: No Passport Required
Effective January 2007, all travelers to Latin America and the Caribbean will need a U.S. passport for air travel. The change comes as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security attempts to alleviate travel concerns about border security under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) and the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. Unlike previous years when passports were not required for travel to the Caribbean, this upcoming travel season may provide headaches for many. As plenty of tourists may have planned family vacations or scheduled weddings unaware of the new passport rules, many analysts foresee a rush on new passport applications at the beginning of the year. Also, because this program will be in its first t...
